The Mentoring Project:

The One on One Mentoring Project is an extension of the Garner Asset Project, sponsored by the Mason City Youth Task Force.  The program is designed to have a caring adult matched with a youth to support and help develop a mentees social development, be a friend, attain higher grade achievement and other aspects of a youth maturing in our community.  The One on One Mentoring Project has both school and community options for a mentor to select from.  For school based mentoring the mentor and mentee would meet during the lunch and recess hour at the school to eat and play some games, talk or just spend time together.  The community aspect of mentoring gives the mentor and mentee more freedom to do other interesting projects together.  The guidelines for the Project are to meet one hour per week, which over times builds a trusting relationship between the mentor and mentee through consistency and mutual respect.  All matches are same gender and one on one.  The optimum goal of the program is to set up a match and watch them grow through the eighth grade under the project coordinator oversight and then remain friends through high school and beyond.  The One on One Mentoring Project is funded by a grant from Iowa Department of Public Health.

Mentor one child… and change two lives.

In 2008, Garner One on One Mentoring became a certified program.
